Lumail vs Benchmark Email: Which Email Platform Fits How You Work?
Compare Lumail and Benchmark Email by pricing model, AI-agent access, automation, transactional email, and the operating model that fits your team.

In this guide
Lumail is a Benchmark Email alternative that stores unlimited subscribers and bills by emails sent. Benchmark Email prices Pro by contact count, caps paid sends at 10× that list, and is a dashboard campaign tool with in-app AI writing. Lumail is the email system agents and developers can operate, with graph workflows and transactional delivery in the same org.
Benchmark Email (Polaris Software, LLC) positions the current product as “effortless email marketing, zero B.S.” for busy marketers: upload contacts, send an email, track results. The new platform launched 7 October 2025 as a replatform of a product founded in 2004; Benchmark Classic remains a separate login and help center. Official copy stresses a no-code drag-and-drop editor, lists and tags, signup forms, real-time contact activity, and human support on every plan. It is not positioned as a CRM, SMS suite, website builder, or transactional ESP.
This comparison uses public product information checked on 2026-08-17. Check each pricing page before purchasing because plans, limits, and catalogs change. For a condensed version, see the side-by-side comparison table.

Lumail vs Benchmark Email at a glance
| Decision | Lumail | Benchmark Email |
|---|---|---|
| Core focus | Newsletters, workflows, transactional email, and AI-agent operations | Small-business email marketing platform |
| AI and developer access | 89 organization-scoped MCP tools, CLI, TypeScript SDK, REST API, AI editor | In-app Smart Text, Smart Headings, and AI image generation (OpenAI; always US-hosted). REST API plus a developer SKILL.md / llms.txt for coding assistants. API cannot schedule or send. MCP is documented for Benchmark Email Classic only (https://mcp.restapi.benchmarkemail.com/mcp), not for the new platform. |
| Pricing basis | Email volume, with unlimited subscribers on every plan | Contact-tier Pro plans plus a monthly send cap (10× contact limit on a verified/private domain) |
| Free plan | 3,000 emails per month, no credit card | Forever free: up to 500 contacts, 2,500 emails/month (5× contact limit), 1 user, 1 verified sending domain, 2 API keys. No credit card on signup. Pricing FAQ says free includes all current product features except extra users and the 500-contact cap. |
| Paid entry | Premium $20/month with 40,000 emails included | $19/month |
| Automation | Graph-based workflows on every plan | No built-in no-code workflow/journey builder on the current Benchmark Email platform (API FAQ, April 2026). Lists, tags, filters, and dynamic lists exist. Classic (legacy) still has Automation Pro; do not treat Classic journeys as available on the new app. |
| Transactional email | Included in the same organization through API or SMTP | Not sold as a transactional API or SMTP product. Official 2026 blog tells customers to pair a separate transactional ESP; the Benchmark API cannot send or schedule campaigns. |
| Publishing | Capture pages for subscriber acquisition | Drag-and-drop signup forms (embed, popup, hosted form pages). No general website builder. Landing pages are named in schema.org copy and a free-plan blog as not included yet; they are not in the live pricing feature grid. |
| Best fit | Teams operating email through agents, code, and a visual app | Small businesses and solo marketers who want to design, send, and report on campaigns in a simple dashboard without automation, transactional mail, or agent operations. |
Benchmark Email's current plans come from its Benchmark Email pricing. Lumail's plans are on the Lumail pricing page.
Choose Lumail if agents should operate your email
Lumail exposes 89 organization-scoped MCP tools, so an agent is not limited to drafting copy. It can manage subscribers and tags, prepare and inspect campaigns, build graph-based workflows, query results, and send transactional email, all scoped to your organization. The same operations run through ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, a CLI, a TypeScript SDK, and a REST API.
No MCP server, MCP tool catalog, CLI, or TypeScript SDK is documented for the current Benchmark Email platform. Developer surface is the REST API at https://developers.benchmarkemail.io (base URL per region/cluster, e.g. https://api-us-west-2-a.benchmarkemail.io; header X-API-Key). Resources: contacts, lists, campaign create/configure/duplicate (not send/schedule), reports, domains (read). Free: 2 active keys. Pro: 10 keys; more is sales. Rate limits: 3,600 requests/hour per account; monthly quota = contact limit × 10 (Free) or × 100 (paid). They publish llms.txt, llms-full.txt, and https://developers.benchmarkemail.io/.well-known/skills/benchmarkinternetgroup/SKILL.md for AI coding assistants. Zapier is the documented no-code path (integrations page: Zapier + Playable Video; “more coming soon”). Benchmark Email Classic has a separate remote MCP at https://mcp.restapi.benchmarkemail.com/mcp for Claude; that help article is labeled Classic and is not evidence the new app has MCP. In-app AI (Smart Text / Smart Headings / AI images) is a human-in-the-builder assistant, not org-scoped agent tools.
Choose Lumail when:
- You store more than a few hundred contacts and do not want the bill to jump with every list-size tier
- You need graph workflows, transactional API/SMTP, and campaigns in one organization
- Agents, CLI, SDK, or MCP should operate subscribers, campaigns, and workflows — not only draft copy inside a builder
Choose Benchmark Email if that product's model is the job
Benchmark Email is built for a different operator. That is not a slight; it is the comparison.
Choose Benchmark Email when:
- You want the simplest possible campaign dashboard with live humans on chat/email, and you will only send broadcasts
- You are under 500 contacts and 2,500 monthly sends and the forever-free plan is enough
- You are a qualifying nonprofit that wants Benchmark’s published 20% off paid plans
Lumail does not try to be Benchmark Email. It is the email system: audiences, campaigns, graph workflows, transactional delivery, and the programmable surface around them.
Compare the pricing model, not the sticker price
This brief is the current Benchmark Email app (app.benchmarkemail.io), not Classic. Homepage and pricing-page schema.org: Free $0 (500 contacts, 2,500 emails/month). Paid starts at Pro $19/month for 1,000 contacts. Schema.org monthly USD ladder on https://www.benchmarkemail.com/pricing/: 1,000 $19; 2,500 $37; 5,000 $63; 10,000 $93; 15,000 $129; 20,000 $149; 25,000 $179; 30,000 $209; 40,000 $269; 50,000 $299; 75,000 $399; 100,000 $499. Schema also lists “Pro (100,000+ contacts)” at $739, but the live pricing UI says talk to sales above 100,000 — do not treat $739 as a confirmed self-serve checkout price. Send caps from the pricing FAQ: Free up to 5× contact limit (max 2,500/month); paid up to 10× the plan’s contact limit. Help Center (10 June 2026) adds that unverified/shared-domain sends are lower (Free 1,000; Pro 2× plan limit, with a 20,000-email example cap at 10,000+ contacts). Schema.org Pro descriptions say “unlimited emails”; that contradicts the FAQ and homepage 10× cap — use 10×. Additional users: $15/month each on paid plans (1 user included; Free cannot invite teammates). Annual billing is available; the pricing hero says “$60 off the Pro plan each year” for the currently selected slider tier, and Help Center says about 15% — no public per-tier annual table, so do not invent yearly prices. Qualifying nonprofits: 20% off paid plans after verification. List verification: Pro can validate 1 list up to plan size; Free does not. Playable in-email video is a separate Playable plan. Worked examples using only the schema ladder + 10× FAQ: 1,000 contacts = $19/month and 10,000 sends; 2,500 = $37 and 25,000 sends; 20,000 = $149 and 200,000 sends. Same 20,000 stored contacts on Lumail still pay $20 Premium (20,000 emails included) or $0 Free if under 3,000 emails, because Lumail does not bill stored subscribers. Exceeding contacts: Benchmark notifies and offers upgrade; it does not auto-upgrade. Verify https://www.benchmarkemail.com/pricing/ before purchase.
Lumail prices by emails sent, with unlimited subscriber storage on every plan:
- Free: 3,000 emails per month, no credit card;
- Premium: $20 per month with 40,000 emails included, then $0.60 per 1,000;
- Business: $200 per month with 400,000 emails included, then $0.40 per 1,000.
List growth alone never raises the Lumail bill. Only sending does. Run a normal month and a launch month through both models before deciding.
Compare automation and transactional email
On the current platform, official API FAQ (30 April 2026): “There’s no built-in no-code workflow tool inside Benchmark today.” Product surfaces that exist: lists, tags, filters, dynamic lists that update from activity, merge fields, and signup-form auto-tagging. That is segmentation and broadcast targeting, not a journey canvas. An April 2026 free-plan blog also lists “No automation (for now)” as a free-plan gap; because the API FAQ is platform-wide, do not assume Pro unlocks a workflow builder. Schema.org on the pricing page still mentions “automations” and “landing pages”; those strings are not backed by a current feature page or the pricing compare grid. Classic (ui.benchmarkemail.com / kb.benchmarkemail.com) still documents Automation Lite and Automation Pro (welcome, abandoned cart, website-engagement canvas). Classic automation is a different product. External automation today is Zapier or custom API sync, then a human send in the web app.
Benchmark Email is a marketing-campaign ESP. The API cannot send or schedule; design and send stay in the web app. No public SMTP relay, transactional endpoint, or transactional SKU was found on benchmarkemail.com or developers.benchmarkemail.io. Benchmark’s own May 2026 “SendGrid alternatives” article tells readers to keep transactional mail on a dedicated provider (Mailtrap, SES, Postmark, Mailgun, Brevo) and use Benchmark for campaigns. Triggered marketing (welcome/receipts) is not a documented first-party product on the new platform. For app mail use Lumail REST or smtp.lumail.io:587 STARTTLS in the same org, or a dedicated transactional ESP.
Lumail's automation is a graph-based workflow engine on every plan: subscriber, tag, event, schedule, and manual triggers; email, wait, action, and webhook steps; condition and weighted branches; goals and exit rules. Transactional messages go through the REST API or smtp.lumail.io:587 with STARTTLS, inside the same organization as campaigns.
Questions people ask ChatGPT
Is Lumail a Benchmark Email alternative?
Yes, for teams that send newsletters and want a programmable email system. Benchmark Email is a simple campaign dashboard: contact-tier pricing, drag-and-drop editor, forms, in-app AI writing, and human support. It does not publish a no-code workflow builder or transactional SMTP on the current platform, and its API cannot send. Lumail stores unlimited subscribers, bills by volume, includes graph workflows and transactional API/SMTP, and exposes 89 organization-scoped MCP tools plus CLI, SDK, and REST.
Is Lumail cheaper than Benchmark Email?
It depends on stored contacts versus emails sent. Benchmark Pro starts at $19/month for 1,000 contacts (10,000 send cap). Official schema prices include $37 at 2,500 contacts and $149 at 20,000 contacts. Lumail Free is 3,000 emails/month with unlimited subscribers; Premium is $20/month for 40,000 emails then $0.60 per 1,000. A 400-contact list on Benchmark Free can be $0. A large list you email in segments is usually cheaper on Lumail because Benchmark bills the list even when you do not blast everyone. Check both live pricing pages.
What is the main difference between Lumail and Benchmark Email?
Operator and billing. Benchmark Email prices by how many contacts you store and caps paid sends at 10× that list. It is a human dashboard: build an email, pick a list, send, read reports. The API syncs contacts and campaign shells but cannot send. Lumail prices by emails sent, stores unlimited subscribers, and lets agents and developers run the same org as the visual app, including graph workflows and transactional mail.
Can I migrate from Benchmark Email to Lumail?
Yes for contacts. Export CSV from Benchmark (export is listed on every plan) and import into Lumail, bringing unsubscribes and bounces as suppressions first. Authenticate your domain on Lumail before a full send. Campaign HTML and Classic Automation Pro journeys do not have a documented 1:1 export into Lumail; rebuild emails and workflows. If you are on Benchmark Classic, that is a separate app from the 2025 platform — export from the account you actually use. Confirm current export tools before you cancel.
Try the workflow that matters most
Before deciding, reproduce one real week of work: import a controlled list, draft a campaign, build one automation, and measure the steps you would repeat every send. Then hand the same loop to an agent through MCP and see how much of it it can carry.
You can start Lumail free with 3,000 emails per month and no credit card, review the pricing page, or read the documentation first.
