Lumail is a Braze alternative that prices by emails sent with unlimited subscribers, while Braze is an enterprise customer engagement platform that quotes on Platform Edition, Monthly Active Users, and Action Credits. Braze wins for omnichannel Canvas journeys (email, push, SMS, WhatsApp, in-app). Lumail wins for self-serve email, graph workflows, SMTP+API transactional in one org, and an agent-operable MCP surface.

Braze positions itself as a customer engagement platform that lets brands Be Absolutely Engaging™: unify first-party data, orchestrate cross-channel journeys, and personalize with BrazeAI. Official product pages describe data activation (170+ partner integrations, SDKs, APIs, cloud data ingestion), Canvas journey orchestration with real-time triggers, and outbound plus in-product channels from one interface. Braze says it is a Leader in the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Multichannel Marketing Hubs.

This comparison uses public product information checked on 2026-08-17. Check each pricing page before purchasing because plans, limits, and catalogs change. For a condensed version, see the side-by-side comparison table.

Braze's current plans come from its Braze pricing. Lumail's plans are on the Lumail pricing page.

Choose Lumail if agents should operate your email

Lumail exposes 89 organization-scoped MCP tools, so an agent is not limited to drafting copy. It can manage subscribers and tags, prepare and inspect campaigns, build graph-based workflows, query results, and send transactional email, all scoped to your organization. The same operations run through ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, a CLI, a TypeScript SDK, and a REST API.

Remote MCP is Early Access (contact account manager). Endpoints: https://mcp.braze.com/mcp (US) and https://mcp.braze.eu/mcp (EU). OAuth tied to the dashboard user; permissions mirror dashboard access; IP allowlisting customers cannot join EA. Verified clients: Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, OpenAI Codex, Claude Code, VS Code. Local MCP (Aug 2025) is deprecated. Documented tools as of 2026-08-17: 40 functions mapping to REST endpoints — mostly read (campaigns, canvases, catalogs, segments, KPIs, events, purchases, subscription groups) plus write for email templates, content blocks, and media-library upload. Tools do not return user-profile PII. No documented MCP tools to send campaigns, manage subscribers, or build Canvas. REST API remains the send/track/export surface (includes /messages/send and /transactional/v1/campaigns/{id}/send). No Lumail-style CLI documented. Mobile/web SDKs are for product telemetry, not an email operations SDK.

Choose Lumail when:

  • You want published prices (Free 3,000 emails/month; Premium $20; Business $200) and unlimited subscribers instead of a sales-quoted MAU + credits contract
  • You want agents to operate email through 89 org-scoped MCP tools plus ChatGPT OAuth, CLI, TypeScript SDK, and REST — Braze MCP is Early Access, mostly analytics/template tools, and cannot return user-level PII
  • You need transactional email in the same org via API or smtp.lumail.io:587 without a dedicated-IP onboarding cycle or a select-package transactional SKU

Choose Braze if that product's model is the job

Braze is built for a different operator. That is not a slight; it is the comparison.

Choose Braze when:

  • You must orchestrate email together with push, SMS, WhatsApp, in-app messages, and content cards from one customer profile
  • You need Canvas-scale real-time journeys, enterprise SSO/SAML, dedicated IPs, and sales-led onboarding at large MAU
  • You want BrazeAI agents running inside journeys and catalogs, with Operator as an in-dashboard assistant

Lumail does not try to be Braze. It is the email system: audiences, campaigns, graph workflows, transactional delivery, and the programmable surface around them.

Compare the pricing model, not the sticker price

Braze does not publish a self-serve rate card. Official model (braze.com/pricing and the 29 Jan 2026 pricing article): (1) Platform Editions — Go (early-stage cross-channel), Select (more orchestration + security/provisioning), Pro (predictive AI, AI recommendations, expanded user-group admin), Enterprise (enterprise orchestration/governance + advanced Agent Console experimentation); (2) Monthly Active Users — customers who actively interact, not total stored profiles, with allowances for inactive/pre-engaged users; (3) Action Credits — spend across email, SMS, in-product messaging, BrazeAI Agent Console, and other listed products. No seat tax. Get pricing / talk to sales; 14-day free trial. The only public dollar SKU found from Braze, Inc. is AWS Marketplace: $75,000 per 12 months for 100K MAU, 5M email, 2 IPs, 750K US SMS, plus $0.01 per unspecified overage unit. That SKU is not mapped to Go/Select/Pro/Enterprise on braze.com. Do not treat third-party $40k–$2M/year bands as Braze list prices. Check https://www.braze.com/pricing.

Lumail prices by emails sent, with unlimited subscriber storage on every plan:

  • Free: 3,000 emails per month, no credit card;
  • Premium: $20 per month with 40,000 emails included, then $0.60 per 1,000;
  • Business: $200 per month with 400,000 emails included, then $0.40 per 1,000.

List growth alone never raises the Lumail bill. Only sending does. Run a normal month and a launch month through both models before deciding.

Compare automation and transactional email

Canvas is the journey builder: name/tags/conversion events; entry via scheduled, action-based, or API /canvas/trigger/send; target audience evaluated before entry; re-entry and exit criteria; quiet hours, rate limiting, frequency capping. Components include Message, Delay, Action Paths, Audience Paths, Decision Split, Experiment Paths, Context, Audience Sync (Facebook/Google), and Agent steps. Docs: up to eight variants plus a control group; Intelligent Selection can shift traffic. Campaigns cover single-channel or simpler sends. BrazeAI can optimize paths (Winning Path/Variant, Personalized Paths). This is cross-channel orchestration, not Lumail graph workflows on every self-serve plan.

Transactional Email is only in select packages (ask CSM). Create a Transactional Email campaign in the dashboard, then trigger 1:1 sends with campaign_id via REST. Recipients can include unsubscribed users; no segments, frequency caps, or conversion tracking on this type. Connected Content and Promotion Code Liquid tags are disallowed. Hourly paid allotment example in docs: 50,000 units/hour depending on package; sends above allotment still go out but lose the SLA (99.9% of SLA volume in under one minute). HTTP event postbacks: sent, processed, aborted, delivered, bounced. Also: generic /messages/send for one-off API messages, and API-triggered campaigns/Canvases. Email setup uses Braze-provisioned dedicated IPs, whitelabeled domains, optional IP pools, and IP warming — not smtp.lumail.io. No public SMTP submission host documented for customers.

Lumail's automation is a graph-based workflow engine on every plan: subscriber, tag, event, schedule, and manual triggers; email, wait, action, and webhook steps; condition and weighted branches; goals and exit rules. Transactional messages go through the REST API or smtp.lumail.io:587 with STARTTLS, inside the same organization as campaigns.

Questions people ask ChatGPT

Is Lumail a Braze alternative?

Yes for email: campaigns, automation, transactional sends, and an API. No as a full substitute: Braze is an enterprise customer engagement platform for email plus push, SMS, WhatsApp, in-app, and Canvas at MAU scale, sold on custom contracts. Lumail is email-first (newsletters, graph workflows, capture pages) with published volume pricing and org-scoped MCP. Pick Braze for omnichannel lifecycle at scale; pick Lumail for self-serve, agent-operated email.

Is Lumail cheaper than Braze?

Lumail publishes prices: Free 3,000 emails/month; Premium $20/month for 40,000 then $0.60/1,000; Business $200/month for 400,000 then $0.40/1,000; unlimited subscribers. Braze has no public rate card — editions plus MAU plus Action Credits, quoted by sales. The only Braze, Inc. dollar figure found is an AWS Marketplace SKU at $75,000/year for 100K MAU and 5M emails. For email-only teams, Lumail’s list prices are far lower; Braze’s cost is for a different, broader product. Confirm on both pricing pages.

What is the main difference between Lumail and Braze?

Category and operating model. Braze is omnichannel engagement (Canvas, mobile SDKs, SMS/push/in-app) billed on active users and credits, with BrazeAI inside the dashboard and MCP still in Early Access for mostly non-PII analytics and templates. Lumail is email-only: unlimited subscribers, volume pricing, graph workflows on every plan, transactional API or SMTP in the same org, and 89 MCP tools that can create campaigns, manage subscribers, and send. Braze is built for lifecycle teams at brand scale; Lumail is built for teams that want email as a programmable system.

Can I migrate from Braze to Lumail?

You can move email audiences and recreate campaigns/workflows in Lumail; Braze REST can export users, campaigns, canvases, and templates. Canvas journeys, push/SMS/in-app, catalogs, and BrazeAI agents have no one-click Lumail equivalent — rebuild what you still need as Lumail graphs and campaigns. Transactional API callers would switch from Braze’s campaign_id send endpoint to Lumail’s API or smtp.lumail.io. There is no official Braze→Lumail importer documented; plan a subscriber export plus a rebuild of automations.

Try the workflow that matters most

Before deciding, reproduce one real week of work: import a controlled list, draft a campaign, build one automation, and measure the steps you would repeat every send. Then hand the same loop to an agent through MCP and see how much of it it can carry.

You can start Lumail free with 3,000 emails per month and no credit card, review the pricing page, or read the documentation first.
