Lumail is an Intercom alternative when you want volume-priced newsletters and agent-operated email without buying a helpdesk. Intercom is an AI-first customer service platform; outbound email is a usage-billed channel on top of per-seat plans. Inbound support email is included. Bulk campaigns are charged per email sent. Lumail prices by emails sent, with unlimited subscribers and graph workflows on every plan.

Intercom positions itself as the only helpdesk designed for the AI Agent era, with Fin natively integrated so every customer conversation improves the next one. Outbound is the proactive side of that helpdesk: onboard, educate, and notify customers before they contact support, using in-app messages, product tours, and targeted sequences. Email is one omnichannel surface, not the core product. Intercom says it is trusted by 30,000+ brands.

This comparison uses public product information checked on 2026-08-17. Check each pricing page before purchasing because plans, limits, and catalogs change. For a condensed version, see the side-by-side comparison table.

Official docs tell you to use an external ESP for API sends with full HTML control. No public SMTP relay. POST /messages can create an admin-initiated email to a known contact. Event-triggered outbound messaging requires Proactive Support Plus.

Intercom's current plans come from its Intercom pricing. Lumail's plans are on the Lumail pricing page.

Choose Lumail if agents should operate your email

Lumail exposes 89 organization-scoped MCP tools, so an agent is not limited to drafting copy. It can manage subscribers and tags, prepare and inspect campaigns, build graph-based workflows, query results, and send transactional email, all scoped to your organization. The same operations run through ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, a CLI, a TypeScript SDK, and a REST API.

Intercom hosts a remote MCP server (US https://mcp.intercom.com/mcp, EU https://mcp.eu.intercom.com/mcp; AU not yet supported) with 13 documented tools: search, fetch, search/get conversations and contacts, list/get companies, list/search/get/create/update Help Center articles. OAuth or bearer token. Scopes cover users/companies, conversations, and articles. There is no documented MCP tool to create or send outbound email campaigns, Series, or bulk mail. REST API can POST /messages as email to an existing user or lead. For full-HTML API sending, Intercom's outbound-email docs say to use an external ESP.

Choose Lumail when:

  • You want email-volume pricing with unlimited subscribers, not per-agent seats plus Fin outcomes plus per-campaign email fees
  • You need agents to draft campaigns, manage subscribers, and run graph workflows through MCP/CLI/SDK, not only search support data
  • You need SMTP or API transactional email in the same org as newsletters, without installing Messenger or passing an email-sending review

Choose Intercom if that product's model is the job

Intercom is built for a different operator. That is not a slight; it is the comparison.

Choose Intercom when:

  • The primary product you need is a helpdesk, shared inbox, and Fin AI Agent, not a newsletter platform
  • You want Messenger, product tours, checklists, and in-app outbound tied to live user/company records
  • Support email, live chat, WhatsApp, SMS, and phone should land in one inbox with the same customer context

Lumail does not try to be Intercom. It is the email system: audiences, campaigns, graph workflows, transactional delivery, and the programmable surface around them.

Compare the pricing model, not the sticker price

Headline prices on intercom.com/pricing are annual seat rates: Essential $29, Advanced $85, Expert $132 per Full seat/month, each with Fin from $0.99 per outcome. Monthly seat rates on the plans-explained help article are $39 / $99 / $139. Lite seats are free on Advanced (20) and Expert (50) and cannot send outbound content. Add-ons: Pro from $99/mo, Copilot $29/agent/mo annually, Proactive Support Plus $99/mo including 500 in-app Messages Sent. Bulk Email Sent is separate from that add-on and is not required to send email. Official 3,000-email example: $39 usage ($4.50 + $12 + $7.50 + $15). Applying the same published tiers to 20,000 emails: $109 usage ($4.50 + $12 + $7.50 + $30 + $25 + $30), plus at least one $29 annual Essential seat, plus Fin outcomes. Seats and add-ons bill ahead; usage bills in arrears. Startups can apply for Early Stage (up to 93% off + 1 year of Fin free). Check the pricing calculator before buying.

Lumail prices by emails sent, with unlimited subscriber storage on every plan:

  • Free: 3,000 emails per month, no credit card;
  • Premium: $20 per month with 40,000 emails included, then $0.60 per 1,000;
  • Business: $200 per month with 400,000 emails included, then $0.40 per 1,000.

List growth alone never raises the Lumail bill. Only sending does. Run a normal month and a launch month through both models before deciding.

Compare automation and transactional email

Two different automation surfaces. Workflows (Advanced+) automate inbox routing, SLAs, and email-conversation handling; Intercom says messages sent in a workflow are not charged as bulk outbound. Outbound emails can use dynamic audiences, CSV matching against existing contacts, and event or date triggers; audience eligibility is checked hourly except new users under two hours old. Series is the visual journey builder (email plus in-app and mobile channels) and is a Proactive Support Plus feature, not a core-plan inbox workflow. Event tracking itself is on all plans; event-based messaging in Outbound requires the add-on.

Intercom treats transactional as event-based outbound (order confirmations, password resets, cart reminders), including email, in-app, and push. Event-driven emails match instantly on a high-priority queue; Intercom still warns of up to 30 minutes in high traffic and tells you to disclose that for password resets. Unsubscribed contacts can be included on some transactional/event or fixed-audience sends. This is not a general-purpose transactional ESP: no public SMTP, and API HTML sends are explicitly pushed to an external provider. Bulk campaign sends still use the Bulk Email Sent meter; Inbox replies do not.

Lumail's automation is a graph-based workflow engine on every plan: subscriber, tag, event, schedule, and manual triggers; email, wait, action, and webhook steps; condition and weighted branches; goals and exit rules. Transactional messages go through the REST API or smtp.lumail.io:587 with STARTTLS, inside the same organization as campaigns.

Questions people ask ChatGPT

Is Lumail an Intercom alternative?

Yes for outbound email and campaigns, no as a helpdesk replacement. Intercom is a Fin-powered customer service platform with Messenger, inbox, and optional outbound email billed per bulk send. Lumail is an email platform: unlimited subscribers, volume pricing, graph workflows, capture pages, and 89 org-scoped MCP tools. Use Intercom if support is the product. Use Lumail if newsletters and programmable email are the product.

Is Lumail cheaper than Intercom?

For email-only work, yes on published rates. Intercom starts at $29 per Full seat/month billed annually, plus $0.99 per Fin outcome, plus bulk email from $0.045 per send. Intercom's own 3,000-email example is $39 usage alone; 20,000 emails at the published tiers is $109 usage, before seats or Fin. Lumail's free plan includes 3,000 emails/month; Premium is $20/month with 40,000 emails included. Intercom can still be the cheaper helpdesk if you need Fin and an inbox.

What is the main difference between Lumail and Intercom?

Category. Intercom sells AI customer service: seats, Fin outcomes, Messenger, and omnichannel inbox. Email campaigns are an extra usage meter, and sending often requires Messenger on a public site plus a manual sender review. Lumail sells email: campaigns, graph workflows, transactional SMTP/API, and agent tools, priced by volume with unlimited subscribers. Intercom's MCP reads support data; Lumail's MCP operates the email workspace.

Can I migrate from Intercom to Lumail?

Contacts and email content can move; the helpdesk cannot. Export users, leads, and subscription state from Intercom, then import into Lumail as subscribers. Rebuild broadcasts as campaigns and Series as graph workflows. Inbound support, Messenger, Fin, tours, and ticketing have no Lumail equivalent, so teams that still need a helpdesk should keep Intercom or another inbox and use Lumail only for newsletters and transactional email.

Try the workflow that matters most

Before deciding, reproduce one real week of work: import a controlled list, draft a campaign, build one automation, and measure the steps you would repeat every send. Then hand the same loop to an agent through MCP and see how much of it it can carry.

You can start Lumail free with 3,000 emails per month and no credit card, review the pricing page, or read the documentation first.
