Choose Lumail if agents should operate your email
Lumail exposes 89 organization-scoped MCP tools, so an agent is not limited to drafting copy. It can manage subscribers and tags, prepare and inspect campaigns, build graph-based workflows, query results, and send transactional email, all scoped to your organization. The same operations run through ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, a CLI, a TypeScript SDK, and a REST API.
Mailjet ships an official open-source MCP server (GitHub mailgun/mailjet-mcp-server, npx @mailjet/mailjet-mcp-server) marketed for Claude Desktop. Help-center docs state it is read-only: contacts, campaigns, segments, statistics, and workflows; it does not send email or change settings. Product pages describe a secure read-only API connection for campaign-performance questions. The published tool catalog and tool count are not listed. Blog copy says developers can extend the server for write access; that is not a documented hosted product. No ChatGPT OAuth plugin or first-party CLI comparable to Lumail is documented. Sending and account ops go through REST (Send API v3.1), SMTP, and official SDKs (PHP, Python, Node, Ruby, C#, Java, Go).
Choose Lumail when:
- You want write-capable, organization-scoped MCP plus a ChatGPT OAuth plugin, CLI, and TypeScript SDK
- You need graph workflows on free and low-cost plans, not only Premium 15k+
- You want unlimited subscriber storage on every plan, including free
Choose Mailjet if that product's model is the job
Mailjet is built for a different operator. That is not a slight; it is the comparison.
Choose Mailjet when:
- You need an EU-hosted ESP with MJML, real-time editor collaboration, and Sinch deliverability services
- You want SMTP/API transactional sending plus a marketer drag-and-drop editor in one account
- You need Premium landing pages, A/B testing, dedicated IPs (100k+), or Parse API (50k+)
Lumail does not try to be Mailjet. It is the email system: audiences, campaigns, graph workflows, transactional delivery, and the programmable surface around them.
Compare the pricing model, not the sticker price
USD monthly prices from the live pricing page JSON on 2026-08-17, excluding VAT (French VAT unless an EU VAT number is supplied). Annual billing is 10% off. Credits do not roll over. Free: $0, 6,000 emails/month, 200/day, 1,000 contacts, APIs/SMTP/webhooks, editor, forms; online support first month only. Starter: $9/month ($8.10 annual equivalent) for 8,000 emails and 2,000 contacts, no daily cap, Brand Kit, 1 subaccount. Essential: $17/month ($15.30 annual) for 15,000 emails or $37/month ($33.30 annual) for 50,000 emails; unlimited contacts, segmentation, AI-assisted content, 500 validations and 500 previews, custom unsubscribe, no Mailjet logo. Premium: $27 (15k), $55 (50k), $105 (100k), $250 (250k), $470 (500k); annual equivalents $24.30 / $49.50 / $94.50 / $225 / $423. Premium adds automations, landing pages, A/B testing, advanced stats, 2,000 previews, team management, up to 20 subaccounts, priority support; phone/chat from 50k; 1 dedicated IP and 2,000 validations from 100k. Custom is quote-only. Official overage per 1,000 emails: Starter 8k and Essential/Premium 15k $2.58; Essential/Premium 50k $1.52; Premium 100k $1.39; 250k $1.25; 500k $1.20. Worked example at 20,000 emails: Lumail Premium is $20 with 20k included; Mailjet Essential 15k is $17 plus 5 × $2.58 = $29.90, or Essential 50k at $37. Automations require Premium, so 20k with workflows is Premium 15k $27 plus the same $2.58/1k overage, or Premium 50k at $55. At 400,000 emails Lumail Business is $200; Mailjet Premium 250k is $250 plus 150 × $1.25 = $437.50, or Premium 500k at $470. Prepaid email accounts exist with a $50 USD minimum deposit. Check the pricing page before buying.
Lumail prices by emails sent, with unlimited subscriber storage on every plan:
- Free: 3,000 emails per month, no credit card;
- Premium: $20 per month with 40,000 emails included, then $0.60 per 1,000;
- Business: $200 per month with 400,000 emails included, then $0.40 per 1,000.
List growth alone never raises the Lumail bill. Only sending does. Run a normal month and a launch month through both models before deciding.
Compare automation and transactional email
Automations are Premium 15k and higher. Downgrading pauses active workflows. The visual builder supports marketing or transactional flows. Start triggers include list subscription, contact-property update, open/click (optional filters by campaign, tag, sender), and external webhook events posted to api.mailjet.com/V3/REST/workflow2/event. Blocks include send email, list membership, contact-property update, condition, event, timer, and exit. Send-email steps can use webhook payload data. Prebuilt templates exist for common journeys. A/B testing (up to 10 versions) and dynamic/conditional content are also Premium. Segmentation without full automation is on Essential+.
Transactional and marketing share the same volume plan. Send via REST Send API or SMTP host in-v3.mailjet.com, ports 587 or 465 (also 25, 80, 2525 documented), authenticating with API key and secret. Event API webhooks cover opens, clicks, bounces, and blocks. Templating language supports variables, loops, and conditionals. Inbound Parse API is documented on Premium 50k+. Dedicated IP is included starting at Premium 100k. A separate SMS API and prepaid SMS wallet exist (dev.mailjet.com SMS docs; calculator referenced at mailjet.com/pricing/#sms); per-country SMS rates were not a static table on the fetched email pricing page.
Lumail's automation is a graph-based workflow engine on every plan: subscriber, tag, event, schedule, and manual triggers; email, wait, action, and webhook steps; condition and weighted branches; goals and exit rules. Transactional messages go through the REST API or smtp.lumail.io:587 with STARTTLS, inside the same organization as campaigns.
Questions people ask ChatGPT
Is Lumail a Mailjet alternative?
Yes, if you need marketing campaigns, automations, and transactional email billed by volume. Both send from one account over API or SMTP. Mailjet is a Sinch ESP with a collaborative editor, MJML, EU hosting, and Premium-only automations. Lumail is a focused email platform with unlimited subscribers on every plan, graph workflows on every plan, capture pages, and 89 org-scoped MCP tools plus ChatGPT OAuth, CLI, and SDK. Lumail has no SMS and no general website builder.
Is Lumail cheaper than Mailjet?
It depends on volume and features. Mailjet Starter is $9/month for 8,000 emails but caps contacts at 2,000. Essential 15k is $17/month with unlimited contacts; overage is $2.58 per 1,000. Lumail Premium is $20/month for 40,000 emails then $0.60 per 1,000, with unlimited subscribers. At 20,000 emails Lumail is $20 versus about $29.90 on Mailjet Essential 15k overage or $37 on Essential 50k. Automations need Mailjet Premium (from $27). At 400,000 emails Lumail Business is $200 versus Mailjet Premium 250k at $250 plus $1.25/1,000 overage, or $470 for Premium 500k. Model your month on both pricing pages.
What is the main difference between Lumail and Mailjet?
Operating surface and plan gates. Mailjet is a classic ESP: marketers in a drag-and-drop editor, developers on Send API/SMTP, AI as in-editor copy and segmentation, MCP as a read-only Claude analytics bridge. Automations, landing pages, and A/B tests start at Premium. Lumail treats the visual app, MCP, ChatGPT, CLI, SDK, and REST API as the same org-scoped product, with graph workflows and unlimited subscriber storage on every plan including free.
Can I migrate from Mailjet to Lumail?
Yes for typical email programs. Export contacts from Mailjet (CSV/TXT/XLS are documented import formats there) and import them into Lumail, then recreate segments, templates, and workflows. Transactional sending can move to Lumail's API or smtp.lumail.io:587 STARTTLS in the same org. There is no official one-click Mailjet importer. Rebuild automations in Lumail graphs; Mailjet workflows pause if you leave Premium. DNS (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) must be pointed at Lumail before cutting over production sends.
Try the workflow that matters most
Before deciding, reproduce one real week of work: import a controlled list, draft a campaign, build one automation, and measure the steps you would repeat every send. Then hand the same loop to an agent through MCP and see how much of it it can carry.
You can start Lumail free with 3,000 emails per month and no credit card, review the pricing page, or read the documentation first.
