Lumail vs Adobe Marketo Engage: Which Email Platform Fits How You Work?
Compare Lumail and Adobe Marketo Engage by pricing model, AI-agent access, automation, transactional email, and the operating model that fits your team.

In this guide
Lumail is a Marketo alternative that bills by emails sent with unlimited subscribers, while Adobe Marketo Engage is an enterprise marketing automation platform licensed per 1,000 contacts with custom quotes. Both send campaigns and expose MCP to agents; Marketo’s MCP is limited-availability and sits on a B2B MAP (CRM sync, scoring, ABM, landing pages, webinars, chat). Lumail is the email system itself: newsletters, graph workflows, capture pages, and transactional SMTP in one org, without CRM or ABM.
Adobe positions Marketo Engage as an AI-powered enterprise marketing automation solution built to scale personalized buyer engagement and grow predictable pipeline and revenue. Official copy describes it as a platform for B2B and B2C considered-purchase leads across demand- and account-based strategies, with batch email, automated nurture, and multi-step campaigns, plus native CRM extensibility. FAQ wording: it streamlines, automates, and measures marketing tasks so teams can increase operational efficiency and grow revenue faster.

Choose Lumail if agents should operate your email
Lumail exposes 89 organization-scoped MCP tools, so an agent is not limited to drafting copy. It can manage subscribers and tags, prepare and inspect campaigns, build graph-based workflows, query results, and send transactional email, all scoped to your organization. The same operations run through ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, a CLI, a TypeScript SDK, and a REST API.
Adobe hosts a Marketo Engage MCP server at https://marketo-mcp.adobe.io/mcp. Official docs (updated 12 August 2026) say it provides more than 100 operations across forms, programs, smart campaigns, leads, emails, snippets, lists, and folders. Status is Limited Availability: request access with the subscription Munchkin ID. Smart List and Smart Campaign Asset API coverage is still being enabled, expected Q3 2026. Documented clients: Claude Desktop, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, VS Code Copilot, Glean. Auth is per-request Marketo client credentials or IMS token; Adobe does not store credentials. The GA automation surface is the REST API (Lead Database + Asset APIs, 2-legged OAuth); SOAP is deprecated as of 31 July 2026. Additional API calls sell in packs of 10,000. No public CLI or first-party TypeScript SDK comparable to Lumail’s. Whether MCP is included in every package is not stated.
Choose Lumail when:
- You want published volume pricing, unlimited subscribers, and a free 3,000-email tier instead of a sales-quoted contact database license
- You need transactional delivery via API or SMTP in the same org as newsletters, without operational-email rules and Request Campaign plumbing
- You want MCP, CLI, TypeScript SDK, and REST on every plan without a limited-availability Adobe MCP request or enterprise implementation
Choose Adobe Marketo Engage if that product's model is the job
Adobe Marketo Engage is built for a different operator. That is not a slight; it is the comparison.
Choose Adobe Marketo Engage when:
- You run B2B demand gen or ABM and need native Salesforce/Dynamics sync, scoring, routing, and sales-ready engagement data
- You need landing pages, forms, webinars, website chat, and revenue attribution in one Adobe Experience Cloud product
- You already have (or will staff) Marketo operations and can buy a custom contact-tier contract
Lumail does not try to be Adobe Marketo Engage. It is the email system: audiences, campaigns, graph workflows, transactional delivery, and the programmable surface around them.
Compare the pricing model, not the sticker price
Adobe does not publish dollar prices. The marketing packaging page lists four packages (Growth, Select, Prime, Ultimate) and a “Get customized pricing” form. Adobe’s legal product description (updated 26 June 2026) licenses Select, Prime, Ultimate, and Performance variants per 1,000 Contacts; add-ons (extra users, API calls, custom objects, TAM, Dynamic Chat Prime, dedicated IPs, Measure, etc.) are also sales-order items. A 2023 Adobe packaging PDF stated “Pricing based on database size” for all four packages. Marketing entitlements shown without prices: Growth 10 users and 20k API calls/day; Select/Prime/Ultimate 25 users and 50k API calls/day. The legal description’s default instance entitlements are 25 marketing users and 50,000 daily API calls (Growth is not named as a SKU there). Do not use third-party monthly estimates; request a quote on Adobe’s pricing page.
Lumail prices by emails sent, with unlimited subscriber storage on every plan:
- Free: 3,000 emails per month, no credit card;
- Premium: $20 per month with 40,000 emails included, then $0.60 per 1,000;
- Business: $200 per month with 400,000 emails included, then $0.40 per 1,000.
List growth alone never raises the Lumail bill. Only sending does. Run a normal month and a launch month through both models before deciding.
Compare automation and transactional email
Smart Campaigns are the workflow engine: trigger and batch campaigns with Smart Lists (filters) and flow steps (send email, change data value, score, request campaign, etc.). Engagement/nurture programs, lead scoring, routing/alerts, and journey automation are first-class MAP features. Packaging copy lists Campaign & Journey Automation on Growth through Ultimate; Prime adds lead- and account-based marketing with journey analytics and AI personalization; Ultimate adds premium attribution (Marketo Measure). Callable agents inside Smart Campaign flow steps are marked coming soon on the agentic-AI product page.
Marketo is not sold as a standalone transactional ESP. Developer docs describe transactional sends via REST Request Campaign: the person must already exist as a lead, an approved email must exist, and an active trigger campaign must use “Campaign is Requested” with source Web Service API. Emails that must bypass unsubscribe, marketing-suspended, and communication limits are marked Operational; Adobe warns this is only for legally operational messages (receipts, password resets, relationship mail), not marketing. There is no public smtp.lumail.io-style included SMTP. Encrypted Authentication and Email Relay appear as add-on/instance features in the product description, not as a self-serve transactional SMTP plan.
Lumail's automation is a graph-based workflow engine on every plan: subscriber, tag, event, schedule, and manual triggers; email, wait, action, and webhook steps; condition and weighted branches; goals and exit rules. Transactional messages go through the REST API or smtp.lumail.io:587 with STARTTLS, inside the same organization as campaigns.
Questions people ask ChatGPT
Is Lumail a Marketo alternative?
Yes for teams that need campaigns, automations, and agent-operable email without an enterprise MAP. Lumail stores unlimited subscribers, bills by send volume, and includes graph workflows plus transactional API/SMTP in the same org. Marketo Engage is Adobe’s B2B automation suite: CRM-synced leads, scoring, ABM, landing pages, webinars, and chat on a custom contact-tier contract. Overlap is email plus MCP; the products are not feature-equivalent.
Is Lumail cheaper than Marketo?
Adobe does not list prices, so a dollar comparison is not possible from official pages. Marketo is quote-only and licensed per 1,000 contacts, with package tiers and paid add-ons. Lumail publishes Free (3,000 emails/month), Premium at $20/month (40,000 emails then $0.60/1,000), and Business at $200/month (400,000 then $0.40/1,000), with unlimited subscribers. For self-serve email, Lumail’s public rates will usually be the cheaper, knowable option; get Adobe’s quote before claiming a specific savings figure.
What is the main difference between Lumail and Marketo?
Scope and billing. Marketo Engage is a CRM-centric marketing automation platform: Smart Campaigns, lead database, ABM, landing pages, chat, webinars, and attribution, sold per 1,000 contacts. Lumail is an email platform billed by volume: newsletters, graph workflows, capture pages, transactional SMTP, and 89 organization-scoped MCP tools on every plan. Marketo’s MCP exists but is limited-availability; Lumail does not replace Marketo’s CRM, scoring, or ABM stack.
Can I migrate from Marketo to Lumail?
You can move subscribers, tags, and campaign/workflow equivalents into Lumail, then send from Lumail’s app, MCP, API, or SMTP. You will not get a lift-and-shift of Smart Campaigns, Salesforce sync, scoring models, Marketo landing pages, Dynamic Chat, or Measure attribution. Export people and engagement data via Marketo’s REST/bulk APIs (subject to daily call limits), rebuild automations as Lumail graph workflows, and keep Marketo if those MAP objects are still required.
Try the workflow that matters most
Before deciding, reproduce one real week of work: import a controlled list, draft a campaign, build one automation, and measure the steps you would repeat every send. Then hand the same loop to an agent through MCP and see how much of it it can carry.
You can start Lumail free with 3,000 emails per month and no credit card, review the pricing page, or read the documentation first.
