Lumail is a Postmark alternative when you want campaigns, graph workflows, subscribers, and transactional email in one agent-operable organization. Postmark is ActiveCampaign's sending API: REST and SMTP for transactional and broadcast application email, with Message Streams so those reputations never mix. Buy Postmark for infrastructure; buy Lumail to operate the channel.

Postmark positions itself as a fast, reliable email delivery service for product teams: REST API and SMTP for transactional mail (password resets, receipts, notifications) and, via Message Streams, broadcast application email (announcements, newsletters sent from your app). Official homepage: 'The email delivery service that people actually like.' llms.txt: 'a reliable transactional and bulk email service that helps developers deliver and track application emails.' It is part of ActiveCampaign. Postmark still vets senders and says it is not a traditional marketing platform.

This comparison uses public product information checked on 2026-08-17. Check each pricing page before purchasing because plans, limits, and catalogs change. For a condensed version, see the side-by-side comparison table.

Pricing basisEmail volume, with unlimited subscribers on every planMonthly email volume, not subscribers. Paid plans include 10,000 emails; extras billed per 1,000. A sent transactional or broadcast message, a sandboxed test, a processed inbound message, and each CC/BCC address all count as 1 email. Unused emails do not roll over. Monthly billing only.
Free plan3,000 emails per month, no credit cardFree Developer plan at $0/mo: 100 emails/month, never expires, no credit card, no overages. Official FAQ: there is no paid tier between 100 and 10,000 emails/month.
Paid entryPremium $20/month with 40,000 emails included$15/month
AutomationGraph-based workflows on every planNo native journey/drip builder, list uploads, or campaign reporting. Sequences live in your application plus webhooks. Zapier Actions and an ActiveCampaign 'Send a transactional email' automation action exist. Broadcast/Bulk sending is API or SMTP, not a visual workflow canvas.
Transactional emailIncluded in the same organization through API or SMTPCore product. REST API at https://api.postmarkapp.com (X-Postmark-Server-Token) and SMTP at smtp.postmarkapp.com on ports 25, 2525, or 587 with STARTTLS. Broadcast SMTP is smtp-broadcasts.postmarkapp.com. Official SDKs include TypeScript/Node, Python, Ruby/Rails, PHP, .NET, and Java.
PublishingCapture pages for subscriber acquisitionServer-side Handlebars templates plus a template editor/import tool. Broadcast Message Streams and a Bulk API (subject to approval) send newsletters from your app. Official Message Streams FAQ: no list uploads, no WYSIWYG campaign builder, no campaign-based reporting, and you manage the main list outside Postmark.
Best fitTeams operating email through agents, code, and a visual appProduct engineering teams that need reliable transactional and application email from code, with stream-separated broadcast, inbound parsing, and a sending API — not a hosted newsletter OS.

Postmark's current plans come from its Postmark pricing. Lumail's plans are on the Lumail pricing page.

Choose Lumail if agents should operate your email

Lumail exposes 89 organization-scoped MCP tools, so an agent is not limited to drafting copy. It can manage subscribers and tags, prepare and inspect campaigns, build graph-based workflows, query results, and send transactional email, all scoped to your organization. The same operations run through ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, a CLI, a TypeScript SDK, and a REST API.

Official MCP is the open-source local stdio server @activecampaign/postmark-mcp (GitHub ActiveCampaign/postmark-mcp; product page postmarkapp.com/lp/mcp). Docs and the v2 announcement: 24 tools in eight categories — send (single, template, batch up to 500, batch-with-template), templates CRUD/validate, outbound search, diagnoseDelivery, bounces, suppressions, stats/server, webhooks. Config: POSTMARK_SERVER_TOKEN, DEFAULT_SENDER_EMAIL, DEFAULT_MESSAGE_STREAM. Clients called out: Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf. Token stays local; HTTPS-only webhooks; optional WEBHOOK_URL_ALLOWLIST; PII-masked logs. The Bulk API is not wrapped by the MCP. Complementary AI: Agent Skills (npx skills add ActiveCampaign/postmark-skills) covering send, inbound, templates, webhooks, and best practices for Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, Codex, Gemini CLI; llms.txt at https://postmarkapp.com/llms.txt; CLI (postmark email|servers|templates); docs AI prompts. No hosted remote MCP catalog or ChatGPT OAuth plugin is documented. Sends through MCP count against the Postmark plan; no separate MCP fee is listed.

Choose Lumail when:

  • You want one organization for campaigns, graph workflows, capture pages, unlimited subscribers, and transactional API/SMTP that agents can operate (89 MCP tools plus ChatGPT OAuth plugin, CLI, SDK)
  • You need a visual editor and graph workflows on every plan rather than sending newsletters from application code
  • You prefer volume pricing with a 3,000-email free tier and $0.60/$0.40 per 1,000 overages over Postmark's 100-email free cap and $1.80–$1.20 per 1,000 paid overages

Choose Postmark if that product's model is the job

Postmark is built for a different operator. That is not a slight; it is the comparison.

Choose Postmark when:

  • Transactional and application email from code is the whole product, and you want Postmark's stream-separated deliverability and support
  • You already store lists in your app and only need API/SMTP, templates, webhooks, and bounce/suppression tooling
  • You need inbound email parsed to JSON webhooks (Pro/Platform) or dedicated IPs at 300,000+ emails/month

Lumail does not try to be Postmark. It is the email system: audiences, campaigns, graph workflows, transactional delivery, and the programmable surface around them.

Compare the pricing model, not the sticker price

Live pricing page HTML (2026-08-17) publishes four plans, all monthly, no annual option: Free Developer $0.00/mo with 100 emails and no overages; Basic $15.00/mo including 10,000 emails, extra emails $1.80 per 1,000; Pro $16.50/mo including 10,000 emails, extra emails $1.30 per 1,000; Platform $18.00/mo including 10,000 emails, extra emails $1.20 per 1,000. There is no public tier between 100 and 10,000 emails. Official support worked example (Basic 10k): 25,000 emails = $15 + 15,000 at $1.80/1k = $42. Same 25,000 on Lumail Premium is $20 + 5,000 at $0.60/1k = $23. Add-ons from the pricing page: dedicated IPs from $50/month per IP (300,000 emails/month minimum, Pro or higher); custom activity retention from $5/month (Pro or higher); DMARC monitoring from $14/month per domain. High-volume custom pricing is sales-only (contact form buckets: <1.5M, 1.5–10M, >10M/month). Bootstrapper credit is $75 for launched, unfunded, paid products. Friend & Family: one free month each on a paying referral. Payments: Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Diners, JCB; no PayPal, invoice, or POs. Overages bill in arrears on the next invoice; sending is not paused on paid plans. Feature table at 10k: Basic up to 4 users / 5 servers / 15 streams / 5 domains; Pro up to 6 users / 10 servers / 30 streams / 10 domains plus inbound; Platform unlimited users/servers/streams/domains plus inbound. Free allows up to 6 users / 10 servers / 30 streams / 10 domains. Check the live calculator before buying; higher slider volumes are not published as separate included-volume SKUs in the page's data-floor attributes.

Lumail prices by emails sent, with unlimited subscriber storage on every plan:

  • Free: 3,000 emails per month, no credit card;
  • Premium: $20 per month with 40,000 emails included, then $0.60 per 1,000;
  • Business: $200 per month with 400,000 emails included, then $0.40 per 1,000.

List growth alone never raises the Lumail bill. Only sending does. Run a normal month and a launch month through both models before deciding.

Compare automation and transactional email

Postmark has no visual automation canvas. Message Streams FAQ: 'we don’t offer some of the features you might want if you were sending traditional marketing campaigns, including support for list uploads, a WYSIWYG editor, and campaign-based reporting' and 'you’ll still need to send those messages via your application.' You keep the main list outside Postmark; unsubscribe/suppression sync is via webhook. Event webhooks cover delivery, bounce, open, click, spam complaint, and subscription change. Official Zapier Actions and the Postmark app inside ActiveCampaign automations ('Send a transactional email') are the documented no-code hooks. Broadcast newsletters go through a Broadcast stream (approval for new senders) or the Bulk API (/email/bulk, subject to support activation, 50 MB payload, async). Batch transactional API is 500 messages/call. Not graph workflows.

Transactional sending is the core product. API: POST https://api.postmarkapp.com/email with X-Postmark-Server-Token; test token POSTMARK_API_TEST. SMTP: smtp.postmarkapp.com (transactional) or smtp-broadcasts.postmarkapp.com (broadcast); ports 25, 2525, or 587; TLS via STARTTLS recommended. Auth is Server API token as user/pass plus X-PM-MESSAGE-STREAM header, or a per-stream SMTP Access Key / Secret Key. Caps from developer docs: 10 MB per email including attachments; 50 recipients combined To/CC/BCC; TextBody/HtmlBody up to 5 MB each. Default transactional stream is outbound. Inbound (Pro/Platform per the 6 Aug 2025 plan update and the live Platform card) posts parsed JSON to a webhook. 45 days of full message content by default; custom retention 7–365 days as a paid add-on on Pro+. Dedicated IPs from $50/IP/month at 300k+ emails/month. Rebound can prompt users in-app after a bounce.

Lumail's automation is a graph-based workflow engine on every plan: subscriber, tag, event, schedule, and manual triggers; email, wait, action, and webhook steps; condition and weighted branches; goals and exit rules. Transactional messages go through the REST API or smtp.lumail.io:587 with STARTTLS, inside the same organization as campaigns.

Questions people ask ChatGPT

Is Lumail a Postmark alternative?

Yes if you want campaigns, graph workflows, capture pages, subscribers, and transactional email in one organization agents can operate. No if the product you are buying is a sending API. Postmark is ActiveCampaign's transactional and application-email service: REST, SMTP, Message Streams, templates, and a 24-tool MCP for send/diagnose. It does not host your list or ship a journey builder. Lumail is the operating surface; Postmark is the infrastructure pipe.

Is Lumail cheaper than Postmark?

On published rates, mixed newsletter plus transactional volume usually costs less on Lumail. Postmark Basic is $15/month for 10,000 emails then $1.80 per 1,000; official example: 25,000 emails = $42. Pro is $16.50 then $1.30 per 1,000; Platform $18 then $1.20 per 1,000. Lumail Premium is $20/month for 40,000 emails then $0.60 per 1,000, so 25,000 emails = $20. Postmark's free plan is 100 emails/month; Lumail's is 3,000. High-volume Postmark quotes are not public — check both pricing pages.

What is the main difference between Lumail and Postmark?

Postmark is developer email infrastructure: you send from code via API or SMTP, keep lists in your app, and split transactional vs broadcast onto separate IPs. Lumail is an email operating system: visual campaigns, graph workflows on every plan, capture pages, unlimited subscribers, and transactional API/SMTP in the same org, with 89 organization-scoped MCP tools plus a ChatGPT OAuth plugin. Postmark's official MCP has 24 send/diagnose tools, not a newsletter-ops catalog.

Can I migrate from Postmark to Lumail?

Yes for marketing and lifecycle email. Postmark does not store your main list, so export recipients and suppressions from whatever holds them, authenticate the domain in Lumail, then point app sends at Lumail's API or smtp.lumail.io:587. Rebuild sequences as graph workflows; there is no Postmark journey to import. Many teams keep Postmark for product transactional mail and move the newsletter to Lumail.

Try the workflow that matters most

Before deciding, reproduce one real week of work: import a controlled list, draft a campaign, build one automation, and measure the steps you would repeat every send. Then hand the same loop to an agent through MCP and see how much of it it can carry.

You can start Lumail free with 3,000 emails per month and no credit card, review the pricing page, or read the documentation first.
