Lumail vs SendGrid: Which Email Platform Fits How You Work?
Compare Lumail and SendGrid by pricing model, AI-agent access, automation, transactional email, and the operating model that fits your team.

In this guide
Lumail is a SendGrid alternative when you want campaigns, workflows, subscribers, and transactional email in one agent-operable organization. SendGrid is Twilio’s email-delivery stack: a volume-priced Email API/SMTP product and a separately billed Marketing Campaigns product. Choose SendGrid for high-volume API/SMTP sending; choose Lumail for one bill, unlimited subscribers, graph workflows, and execute-ready MCP tools.
Twilio SendGrid is a cloud email platform for transactional and marketing mail. The Email API sends through REST or SMTP relay, with dynamic templates, authentication (SPF/DKIM), analytics, and optional dedicated IPs. Marketing Campaigns is the marketer-facing product for templates, lists, single sends, signup forms, and automations. sendgrid.com pricing now points at Twilio.com; Twilio positions SendGrid as the high-volume email product and Twilio Email as a separate console-embedded channel.
This comparison uses public product information checked on 2026-08-17. Check each pricing page before purchasing because plans, limits, and catalogs change. For a condensed version, see the side-by-side comparison table.

Lumail vs SendGrid at a glance
| Decision | Lumail | SendGrid |
|---|---|---|
| Core focus | Newsletters, workflows, transactional email, and AI-agent operations | Cloud email delivery API/SMTP with a separately billed marketing campaigns product |
| AI and developer access | 89 organization-scoped MCP tools, CLI, TypeScript SDK, REST API, AI editor | Twilio MCP (public beta) at https://mcp.twilio.com/docs is read-only docs search: twilio__search and twilio__retrieve over OpenAPI specs and SendGrid docs. It does not execute API calls. Execute-ready OAuth MCP is listed as planned. Twilio Skills include twilio-sendgrid-email-send for coding agents. No official org-scoped SendGrid MCP catalog or ChatGPT OAuth plugin. REST API v3 plus official SDKs (Node, Python, PHP, Java, C#, Go, Ruby). |
| Pricing basis | Email volume, with unlimited subscribers on every plan | Two independently purchased subscriptions. Email API is billed by monthly send volume. Marketing Campaigns is billed by stored contacts plus marketing email volume. Overage is per extra email (and per extra contact on Marketing Campaigns). API sends do not consume Marketing Campaigns credits, and vice versa. |
| Free plan | 3,000 emails per month, no credit card | 60-day trial, no credit card: 100 Email API emails/day, plus 100 Marketing Campaigns emails/day and 100 stored contacts. After 60 days, sending stops until a paid Email API and/or Marketing Campaigns plan is selected. Trial is once-only; upgrading ends it. |
| Paid entry | Premium $20/month with 40,000 emails included | $15/month (Marketing Campaigns Basic); Email API Essentials from $19.95/month |
| Automation | Graph-based workflows on every plan | Marketing Campaigns Advanced (from $60/month): welcome and custom drip series triggered when contacts join a list or segment, with day/hour delays. Docs recommend keeping a series to 10 emails. Not graph workflows. Paid automation is not on Basic; docs require upgrading to Advanced. |
| Transactional email | Included in the same organization through API or SMTP | Core Email API product: Web API v3 Mail Send at https://api.sendgrid.com/v3/mail/send, SMTP at smtp.sendgrid.net port 587, dynamic templates, event webhooks, inbound parse. Counted only against the Email API plan. Twilio Email in the Twilio Console is a separate product (from $0.0013/email) and is not SendGrid Email API. |
| Publishing | Capture pages for subscriber acquisition | Marketing Campaigns Single Sends with drag-and-drop and code editors, responsive templates, signup forms, A/B testing, segmentation, and scheduling. Not a hosted public newsletter publication. |
| Best fit | Teams operating email through agents, code, and a visual app | Engineering teams that need high-volume transactional and promotional delivery through API or SMTP, with optional Marketing Campaigns for list-based single sends and drip series, especially if they already use Twilio. |
SendGrid's current plans come from its Twilio SendGrid Email API pricing. Lumail's plans are on the Lumail pricing page.
Choose Lumail if agents should operate your email
Lumail exposes 89 organization-scoped MCP tools, so an agent is not limited to drafting copy. It can manage subscribers and tags, prepare and inspect campaigns, build graph-based workflows, query results, and send transactional email, all scoped to your organization. The same operations run through ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, a CLI, a TypeScript SDK, and a REST API.
Official Twilio MCP (public beta, updated 2026-07-20) is hosted at https://mcp.twilio.com/docs with two tools: twilio__search and twilio__retrieve. It indexes Twilio OpenAPI specs plus SendGrid and Segment docs. No auth. Explicitly read-only: it does not send email or mutate a SendGrid account. Docs list execute-ready OAuth MCP as a planned addition. Twilio Skills (public beta) include twilio-sendgrid-email-send, which teaches coding agents how to call the Email API; that is procedural guidance, not an org-scoped tool catalog. A Twilio community blog post shows how to build a local SendGrid MCP server; that is not a first-party hosted product. No public ChatGPT OAuth plugin that operates a SendGrid workspace was found on official pages.
Choose Lumail when:
- You want one organization for campaigns, graph workflows, capture pages, subscribers, and transactional SMTP/API, billed by email volume with unlimited subscribers
- You want agents to operate the workspace (89 organization-scoped MCP tools, ChatGPT plugin, CLI, SDK) rather than search SendGrid docs
- You need graph workflows on every plan, including free, instead of SendGrid’s Advanced-only linear drip series
Choose SendGrid if that product's model is the job
SendGrid is built for a different operator. That is not a slight; it is the comparison.
Choose SendGrid when:
- Transactional volume and inbox placement at large scale are the product, and you want SMTP/API infrastructure rather than a newsletter operating surface
- You need dedicated IPs, subusers, IP pools, and Twilio deliverability/onboarding services
- You already buy Twilio communications and want Email API as another channel beside SMS, WhatsApp, and Voice
Lumail does not try to be SendGrid. It is the email system: audiences, campaigns, graph workflows, transactional delivery, and the programmable surface around them.
Compare the pricing model, not the sticker price
Twilio.com pricing (current as of August 2026): Email API paid plans start at $19.95/month; Marketing Campaigns paid plans start at $15/month. New accounts get a 60-day trial (100 emails/day API; 100 marketing emails/day and 100 contacts). Email API feature table: Free Trial $0/60 days; Essentials from $19.95/mo; Pro from $89.95/mo (dedicated IP, subusers, SSO, 2,500 validation credits); Premier custom. Live Email API overages: Essentials 50K $0.0013/email; Essentials 100K $0.0009; Pro 100K $0.0011; Pro 300K $0.0009; Pro 700K $0.0008; Pro 1.5M $0.0006; Pro 2.5M $0.0005. Twilio’s hosted Email API pricing PDF maps those volumes to $19.95, $34.95, $89.95, $249, $499, $799, $1,099/mo; confirm on the live slider. Marketing Campaigns: Basic from $15/mo; Advanced from $60/mo; Custom. Overages (per extra email or contact): Basic 5K 5,000 contacts / 15,000 emails at $0.0040; Basic 10K $0.0030; Basic 20K $0.0030; Basic 50K $0.0028; Basic 100K $0.0023; Advanced 10K 10,000 contacts / 50,000 emails at $0.0075; Advanced 20K $0.0060; Advanced 50K $0.0060; Advanced 100K $0.0050; Advanced 200K $0.0050. You must buy Email API and Marketing Campaigns separately to use both. Worked example from official floors only: 20,000 transactional emails/month can fit Email API Essentials from $19.95 (50K allotment). The same team that also needs lists and automations adds Marketing Campaigns Advanced from $60, so two SendGrid subscriptions versus Lumail Premium at $20/month for 40,000 emails with unlimited subscribers. Exact slider prices above those floors are not listed as static HTML; check the pricing pages.
Lumail prices by emails sent, with unlimited subscriber storage on every plan:
- Free: 3,000 emails per month, no credit card;
- Premium: $20 per month with 40,000 emails included, then $0.60 per 1,000;
- Business: $200 per month with 400,000 emails included, then $0.40 per 1,000.
List growth alone never raises the Lumail bill. Only sending does. Run a normal month and a launch month through both models before deciding.
Compare automation and transactional email
Official docs: “To access this feature, upgrade to Advanced Marketing Campaigns from Your Products.” Product page: try automation on the free trial, then upgrade to Advanced from $60/month. Automations are Welcome or Custom series. Contacts enter when added to a chosen list or segment after the automation is live. Exit options: received all emails; no longer meet entry criteria; or a custom condition (15 exit-criteria cap per parent/subuser). Timing is days/hours between emails. Docs warn to keep workflows to 10 messages. Triggers are list/segment membership, not an arbitrary event graph. Basic Marketing Campaigns “What’s included” on the live pricing cards omits Automation; do not assume Basic includes it. Email API plans do not include this campaign automation product.
Mail Send is POST https://api.sendgrid.com/v3/mail/send with a Bearer API key. SMTP relay is smtp.sendgrid.net:587, AUTH LOGIN with username apikey. Official libraries: PHP, Python, Node.js, Java, C#, Go, Ruby. One email to one recipient consumes one Email API credit even if deferred or sent to spam. Marketing Campaigns sends are a separate package. Inbound Parse webhook and event webhooks are on the Email API feature table (1/2/5 webhooks by plan). Searchable email activity is 3 days on Free Trial and Essentials, 7 days on Pro/Premier. Dedicated IP included on Pro and Premier (additional IPs purchasable; add-on price not listed on the fetched pages). Twilio Email (“starts at $0.0013/email”) is a different Twilio Console product built on similar infrastructure, not the SendGrid Email API plan.
Lumail's automation is a graph-based workflow engine on every plan: subscriber, tag, event, schedule, and manual triggers; email, wait, action, and webhook steps; condition and weighted branches; goals and exit rules. Transactional messages go through the REST API or smtp.lumail.io:587 with STARTTLS, inside the same organization as campaigns.
Questions people ask ChatGPT
Is Lumail a SendGrid alternative?
Yes if you want campaigns, graph workflows, subscribers, and transactional email in one organization that agents can operate. SendGrid is Twilio’s delivery stack: a volume-priced Email API/SMTP product and a separately purchased Marketing Campaigns product. It is the better alternative when the job is high-volume transactional sending, dedicated IPs, and SMTP relay. It is a weaker match if you need one bill, unlimited subscribers, graph workflows on every plan, or execute-ready MCP tools rather than docs search.
Is Lumail cheaper than SendGrid?
It depends which SendGrid products you buy. Lumail Premium is $20/month for 40,000 emails and unlimited subscribers. SendGrid Email API Essentials starts at $19.95/month for 50,000 emails, so pure API volume can be cheaper on SendGrid at that floor. Marketing Campaigns Basic starts at $15/month (Basic 5K: 5,000 contacts / 15,000 emails) and is a second subscription. Automations require Advanced from $60/month. A team that needs API sending plus marketing automation pays two SendGrid bills; compare that stack to one Lumail plan. Confirm slider prices on Twilio’s pages.
What is the main difference between Lumail and SendGrid?
SendGrid is email infrastructure at scale, split into Email API and Marketing Campaigns with separate quotas, SMTP at smtp.sendgrid.net, and Twilio-scale deliverability tooling. Lumail is one organization for campaigns, graph workflows, capture pages, and transactional API/SMTP, billed by email volume with unlimited subscribers and 89 organization-scoped MCP tools. Twilio’s official MCP searches SendGrid docs; it does not operate your account. SendGrid automation is an Advanced Marketing drip series, not a graph workflow on every plan.
Can I migrate from SendGrid to Lumail?
Yes. Export Marketing Campaigns contacts and suppression/unsubscribe state, authenticate the domain in Lumail, then point transactional traffic from smtp.sendgrid.net or Mail Send to Lumail’s API or smtp.lumail.io:587. Rebuild list-based drip automations as graph workflows. Email API and Marketing Campaigns counts are separate in SendGrid, so migrate both streams if you use both. Searchable activity on listed SendGrid plans is only 3–7 days, so do not treat the dashboard as an archive.
Try the workflow that matters most
Before deciding, reproduce one real week of work: import a controlled list, draft a campaign, build one automation, and measure the steps you would repeat every send. Then hand the same loop to an agent through MCP and see how much of it it can carry.
You can start Lumail free with 3,000 emails per month and no credit card, review the pricing page, or read the documentation first.
