Lumail is a SparkPost alternative when you want campaigns, graph workflows, subscribers, and transactional email in one agent-operable organization. SparkPost is now Bird Email: MessageBird acquired it in 2021 and rebranded sparkpost.com in 2023. It is sending infrastructure — REST API, SMTP on the heritage plans, dedicated IPs — billed by monthly volume. Buy SparkPost/Bird for the pipe; buy Lumail to operate the channel.

SparkPost positioned itself as a developer-centric email delivery service (REST Transmissions API, SMTP, Signals analytics). Bird's official pages now say SparkPost is Bird Email: the same deliverability engine on one API with SMS, WhatsApp, and voice. Organization schema on bird.com lists alternateName MessageBird and SparkPost. Existing SparkPost customers are told they are already on the Bird network. sparkpost.com and sparkpost.com/pricing redirect to Bird (pricing canonical: https://bird.com/en-us/pricing/email).

This comparison uses public product information checked on 2026-08-17. Check each pricing page before purchasing because plans, limits, and catalogs change. For a condensed version, see the side-by-side comparison table.

Surveys live in the same editor as the rest of the campaign. Agents can draft the send; a human still hits Test and Schedule.

Lumail vs SparkPost at a glance

DecisionLumailSparkPost
Core focusNewsletters, workflows, transactional email, and AI-agent operationsTransactional email API and SMTP delivery platform (now Bird Email)
AI and developer access89 organization-scoped MCP tools, CLI, TypeScript SDK, REST API, AI editorSuccessor Bird Email documents a hosted MCP server (https://mcp.bird.com), local bird mcp, a bird CLI, and bird-ai agent skills for Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Copilot, and Factory Droid. Documented MCP surface is send/inspect, templates, suppressions, sending domains, dedicated IPs/pools, webhooks_list, get_workspace, and whoami — not a newsletter-ops catalog. No SparkPost-branded ChatGPT OAuth plugin documented.
Pricing basisEmail volume, with unlimited subscribers on every planMonthly email volume on Starter, Premier, and Enterprise sending plans — not subscriber count. Live volume picker: Test, 50K, 100K, 250K, 500K, 1M, 5M+.
Free plan3,000 emails per month, no credit cardSparkPost/Bird email pricing page includes a Test volume option; the default 50K view does not show Test's included volume or price. Bird Email (official successor product page) advertises start free with 1,000 emails/month, no card.
Paid entryPremium $20/month with 40,000 emails included$20/month
AutomationGraph-based workflows on every planNo visual journey/graph builder on the SparkPost sending product. Premier adds scheduled sending and A/B testing (support FAQ, last updated March 2021: scheduled send 3 days; A/B testing 10 max). Sequences live in your application plus transmissions, templates, and webhooks. Bird also sells a separate marketing platform with Journeys/Workflows — that is not the SparkPost API.
Transactional emailIncluded in the same organization through API or SMTPCore product. SparkPost REST API at https://api.sparkpost.com/api/v1 (EU: https://api.eu.sparkpost.com/api/v1) Transmissions endpoint, plus SMTP relay at smtp.sparkpostmail.com (EU: smtp.eu.sparkpostmail.com) ports 587 or 2525 with STARTTLS; AUTH LOGIN user SMTP_Injection. Official client libraries include Node, PHP, Python, Java, Elixir, NodeMailer, and Go. Bird Email API is the current HTTP send surface; Bird's Postmark comparison states that new Bird Email API does not offer a customer-facing SMTP relay.
PublishingCapture pages for subscriber acquisitionNot a hosted newsletter publication. SparkPost: templates, snippets, campaign_id on transmissions, scheduled send on Premier. Bird Email API adds broadcasts, audiences, and stored templates. Marketers use Bird's separate campaigns/journeys CRM, not SparkPost as a Substack-style pub.
Best fitTeams operating email through agents, code, and a visual appEngineering teams that need SparkPost-scale deliverability (Bird claims ~40% of commercial email) via API or SMTP, dedicated IPs, and Signals analytics — not a hosted newsletter OS.

SparkPost's current plans come from its SparkPost / Bird email pricing. Lumail's plans are on the Lumail pricing page.

Choose Lumail if agents should operate your email

Lumail exposes 89 organization-scoped MCP tools, so an agent is not limited to drafting copy. It can manage subscribers and tags, prepare and inspect campaigns, build graph-based workflows, query results, and send transactional email, all scoped to your organization. The same operations run through ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, a CLI, a TypeScript SDK, and a REST API.

No SparkPost-branded MCP catalog. Successor Bird documents: hosted remote MCP at https://mcp.bird.com (OAuth, Streamable HTTP; ChatGPT listed as a client via developer-mode connector); local stdio via bird mcp; bird CLI as the default agent surface; bird-ai marketplace plugin (github.com/messagebird/bird-ai) with skills for send/inspect, sending domains, and webhooks. Official MCP page lists a hand-curated toolset (email_send, email_send_batch, email_list, email_get; template CRUD/preview/versions; suppressions; email_domains_*; dedicated IPs and IP pools; webhooks_list, get_workspace, whoami) and says the live client listing is authoritative — do not publish a guessed tool count. That surface is send/infra, not subscribers/campaigns/workflows. REST remains https://api.sparkpost.com/api/v1 for heritage accounts. No documented org-scoped ChatGPT plugin that operates a SparkPost newsletter workspace.

Choose Lumail when:

  • You want one organization for campaigns, graph workflows, capture pages, unlimited subscribers, and transactional API/SMTP that agents can operate (89 MCP tools plus ChatGPT OAuth plugin, CLI, SDK)
  • You need a visual editor and graph workflows on every plan rather than sending from application code on SparkPost/Bird
  • You want execute-ready org-scoped newsletter tools, not only Bird's send/domain/IP MCP surface

Choose SparkPost if that product's model is the job

SparkPost is built for a different operator. That is not a slight; it is the comparison.

Choose SparkPost when:

  • High-volume transactional and marketing delivery on the SparkPost network is the product, and you want API/SMTP, dedicated IPs, and Signals — not a newsletter UI
  • You need SparkPost subaccounts, IP pools, inbound relay webhooks, or Enterprise TAM/unlimited dedicated IPs
  • You already send on SparkPost and want to stay on that reputation while adding Bird SMS/WhatsApp/voice on the successor platform

Lumail does not try to be SparkPost. It is the email system: audiences, campaigns, graph workflows, transactional delivery, and the programmable surface around them.

Compare the pricing model, not the sticker price

Live HTML from https://www.sparkpost.com/pricing/ (301 to https://bird.com/pricing/email?sp=true; canonical https://bird.com/en-us/pricing/email) on 2026-08-17, USD, default volume 50K selected: Starter $20.00/month ('For new senders sending their first production emails'); Premier $75.00/month ('For senders who need dedicated IPs, A/B testing, and deliverability tools'); Enterprise Custom ('Competitive prices for +5M emails monthly'). Starter feature list includes API or SMTP Relay, Signals Predictive Analytics, health-score and real-time alerting, spam-trap monitoring, engagement insights, AMP emails, searchable events, 2 custom webhooks, templates/snippets, online support. Premier adds all Starter features, 5 custom webhooks, inbound email webhooks, 15 subaccounts, scheduled sending, A/B testing, dedicated IP included, automated IP warmup. Page footer: 'Commit to a monthly volume and unlock lower rates. Contact sales.' Overage per-1,000 rates were not shown on the default 50K cards — do not invent them. Separate official storefront https://bird.com/en-us/pricing describes a newer Bird platform grid (Free; Startup $15 for 50K emails, $30 for 100K; Growth to 2.5M; then Enterprise) and must not be mixed with the SparkPost Starter/Premier cards without labeling it. Bird's Postmark comparison page lists $20/mo at 50K (Starter), $170/mo at 250K (Premier), $525/mo at 1M (Premier); those mid-tier figures were not independently captured from the live volume picker beyond the 50K default. Worked example using only the live 50K Starter floor: 50,000 emails/month is $20 on SparkPost Starter. Same 50,000 on Lumail Premium is $20 + 30,000 overage at $0.60 per 1,000 = $38. Check both live pricing pages; SparkPost prices change with the volume picker.

Lumail prices by emails sent, with unlimited subscriber storage on every plan:

  • Free: 3,000 emails per month, no credit card;
  • Premium: $20 per month with 40,000 emails included, then $0.60 per 1,000;
  • Business: $200 per month with 400,000 emails included, then $0.40 per 1,000.

List growth alone never raises the Lumail bill. Only sending does. Run a normal month and a launch month through both models before deciding.

Compare automation and transactional email

SparkPost sending is not a journey builder. You send transmissions from code, optionally with stored templates, substitution, campaign_id, and webhooks (Starter: 2 custom webhooks; Premier: 5 plus inbound). Support FAQ 'Starter vs Premier' (updated March 2021, still published): Starter has no A/B testing, no automated IP warmup, no dedicated IP, no inbound email, no IP pools, no SSO, no subaccounts; Premier adds those (A/B 10 max, 1 dedicated IP included, 15 subaccounts max, scheduled send 3 days). Bird's marketing cloud (Journeys, Campaigns, CDP) is a different product from SparkPost email sending. Not graph workflows.

Transactional sending is the core SparkPost product. API: POST https://api.sparkpost.com/api/v1/transmissions with Authorization API key (EU host api.eu.sparkpost.com). SMTP: smtp.sparkpostmail.com or smtp.eu.sparkpostmail.com; ports 587 or 2525; STARTTLS; AUTH LOGIN; username SMTP_Injection; password = API key with Send via SMTP. Subaccount SMTP username form: SMTP_Injection:X-MSYS-SUBACCOUNT=<id>. Sandbox domain sparkpostbox.com is limited to 5 emails for the lifetime of the account. Events searchable (Premier/Starter both list event search); webhooks for delivery lifecycle. Bird Email API (current SDK @messagebird/sdk) is HTTP-only per Bird vs Postmark: 'Bird does not offer a customer SMTP relay.' Heritage SparkPost SMTP docs remain published. Inbound email webhooks are a Premier feature on the live pricing cards.

Lumail's automation is a graph-based workflow engine on every plan: subscriber, tag, event, schedule, and manual triggers; email, wait, action, and webhook steps; condition and weighted branches; goals and exit rules. Transactional messages go through the REST API or smtp.lumail.io:587 with STARTTLS, inside the same organization as campaigns.

Questions people ask ChatGPT

Is Lumail a SparkPost alternative?

Yes if you want campaigns, graph workflows, capture pages, subscribers, and transactional email in one organization agents can operate. No if the product you are buying is a sending API. SparkPost is now Bird Email after MessageBird's 2021 acquisition and the 2023 rebrand. It is infrastructure: Transmissions API, SMTP on heritage plans, dedicated IPs, Signals. Lumail is the operating surface; SparkPost is the pipe.

Is Lumail cheaper than SparkPost?

It depends on volume and which Bird storefront you land on. Live SparkPost email pricing (50K default) is Starter $20/month and Premier $75/month; Enterprise is custom. Lumail Premium is $20/month for 40,000 emails then $0.60 per 1,000, so 50,000 emails ≈ $26. SparkPost Starter at $20 for 50K included can be cheaper at that floor if 50K is the allotment. Overage rates were not on the default cards. A newer Bird /pricing page lists Startup $15 for 50K. Compare both live pages.

What is the main difference between Lumail and SparkPost?

SparkPost (Bird Email) is developer email infrastructure on a high-volume deliverability network: API, SMTP on Starter/Premier, Signals, dedicated IPs. Lumail is an email operating system: visual campaigns, graph workflows on every plan, capture pages, unlimited subscribers, and transactional API/SMTP in the same org, with 89 organization-scoped MCP tools plus a ChatGPT OAuth plugin. Bird's MCP sends and inspects mail; it does not run a newsletter workspace.

Can I migrate from SparkPost to Lumail?

Yes for marketing and lifecycle email. Export recipient lists and the suppression list (SparkPost getting-started docs treat that import as mandatory when leaving another ESP), authenticate the domain in Lumail, then point Transmissions or smtp.sparkpostmail.com traffic at Lumail's API or smtp.lumail.io:587. Rebuild any scheduled/A/B sends as graph workflows. Many teams keep SparkPost/Bird for peak transactional volume and move the newsletter to Lumail.

Try the workflow that matters most

Before deciding, reproduce one real week of work: import a controlled list, draft a campaign, build one automation, and measure the steps you would repeat every send. Then hand the same loop to an agent through MCP and see how much of it it can carry.

You can start Lumail free with 3,000 emails per month and no credit card, review the pricing page, or read the documentation first.
