Welcome email subject lines
The welcome email is the one new subscribers are waiting for, so its subject line has one job: be instantly recognizable as the email they asked for. These lines are grouped by style. Copy one, swap the brackets, and keep it honest.

- 1
You're in. Here's what happens next
Confirms the signup worked and promises useful information, without hype.
- 2
Your [resource name] is inside
For lead magnets, naming the thing they asked for is the strongest possible subject.
- 3
Welcome, {{name | 'friend'}}. Start here
Personal, short, and points to a single first step.
Replace everything in [square brackets]. Text like {{name | 'Hey'}} is a Lumail variable: it shows the subscriber's name, or the fallback after the pipe when the name is empty. Character counts below use the fallback.
Curiosity
Open a small loop the email closes. Keep it tied to what they signed up for so it never feels like bait.

What makes these work
- Recognition beats cleverness. The reader just signed up. A subject that makes it obvious this is the email they expected gets opened; a clever one can look like a stranger's newsletter.
- Keep the key words in the first 40 characters. Mobile inboxes often cut subjects at around 30 to 40 characters, depending on the device and app. Put the important words first and let the rest be a bonus.
- Always set a fallback. Personalized lines need a default. In Lumail, {{name | 'friend'}} prints the name when you have it and "friend" when you don't.
- Pair it with preview text. The preview text is read with the subject. "You're in" plus "Here's the guide you asked for and what comes next" is stronger than either alone.
- Match the sender name. Use the brand or person the subscriber saw on the signup form. A familiar sender name is what makes a short subject work.
Before sending, paste your line into the subject line tester to check its length and wording, and run the full email through the spam tester.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good welcome email subject line?
One that the new subscriber instantly recognizes as the email they expected: it names your brand or the thing they signed up for, and promises a clear next step. "You're in. Here's what happens next" is a safe default.
How long should a welcome email subject line be?
Aim for under 40 characters, with the important words first. Mobile inboxes often truncate around 30 to 40 characters, depending on the device and app.
Should I use the subscriber's name in the subject line?
It can help the email feel personal, but only with a fallback for subscribers who did not give a name. In Lumail, write {{name | 'friend'}} so nobody sees an empty gap.
Should welcome subject lines use emojis?
They are optional. If your brand uses them elsewhere, one can help a subject stand out. If not, a clear plain subject is just as effective for an email the reader is expecting.
