Lumail vs MailPoet: Which Email Platform Fits How You Work?
Compare Lumail and MailPoet by pricing model, AI-agent access, automation, transactional email, and the operating model that fits your team.

In this guide
Lumail is a MailPoet alternative that stores unlimited subscribers and prices by emails sent, while MailPoet is a WordPress/WooCommerce plugin that prices by subscriber count and runs email from wp-admin. Both send newsletters and automations; MailPoet’s edge is native WordPress and store email, Lumail’s is agent-operated email plus transactional API/SMTP without requiring WordPress.
MailPoet positions itself as email marketing for WordPress-powered websites: create, send, and grow campaigns without leaving the WordPress dashboard. The homepage claims 500,000+ websites, drag-and-drop templates, automatic welcome and latest-post emails, and an in-house sending service built for WordPress. WooCommerce pages add checkout signup, abandoned-cart and purchase automations, branded store emails, and revenue-per-email stats. MailPoet has been an Automattic/WooCommerce product since December 2020 (official 2020 retrospective).

Lumail vs MailPoet at a glance
| Decision | Lumail | MailPoet |
|---|---|---|
| Core focus | Newsletters, workflows, transactional email, and AI-agent operations | WordPress email marketing plugin with WooCommerce automations |
| AI and developer access | 89 organization-scoped MCP tools, CLI, TypeScript SDK, REST API, AI editor | No customer MCP, CLI, or TypeScript SDK. PHP in-process API (\MailPoet\API\API::MP('v1')) for subscribers and lists. Optional block-editor subject/preview suggestions if WordPress 7.0+ has an Anthropic, Google, or OpenAI connector. WordPress.com powers in-plugin knowledge-base search with AI. Not an agent-operated email platform. |
| Pricing basis | Email volume, with unlimited subscribers on every plan | Subscriber count (unique recipients). Paid Business/Agency: unlimited monthly emails via MailPoet Sending Service. Creator: Premium features, send via host or third-party SMTP (provider sets volume limits). |
| Free plan | 3,000 emails per month, no credit card | Starter is $0: 500 subscribers, 5,000 emails/month, MailPoet Sending Service, MailPoet branding, summarized stats, basic automation. WordPress.org separately documents a free plugin path of up to 1,000 subscribers when sending with your own host/SMTP (not the Sending Service). Max two free sending plans per MailPoet.com account. Paid Premium plugin is not included. |
| Paid entry | Premium $20/month with 40,000 emails included | $8/month |
| Automation | Graph-based workflows on every plan | Visual automations with triggers (subscribe, tags, WP user events, WooCommerce order/cart/subscription) plus delay, if/else, send email, lists/tags, and paid Woo/WP actions. Starter: welcome emails, latest-post notifications, abandoned cart, first purchase, product/category follow-ups. Paid: custom triggers/actions, if/else branching, subscriber-management actions, re-engagement. Not a general graph workflow product outside WordPress. |
| Transactional email | Included in the same organization through API or SMTP | Can send WordPress and WooCommerce transactional mail through MailPoet Sending Service, host, SMTP, Amazon SES, or SendGrid (replaces a separate SMTP plugin). WooCommerce order/shipping templates can be branded. Not a hosted send API or public SMTP relay for non-WordPress apps. Transactional volume and unique recipients count toward plan limits when using MailPoet Sending Service. |
| Publishing | Capture pages for subscriber acquisition | Gutenberg signup forms (popup, slide-in, fixed bar, below posts, widget, shortcode, exit intent), WooCommerce checkout opt-in, newsletter archives. Not a general website builder. Capture happens on the WordPress site. |
| Best fit | Teams operating email through agents, code, and a visual app | WordPress and WooCommerce site owners who want newsletters, forms, and store lifecycle email inside wp-admin without a separate ESP dashboard. |

Choose Lumail if agents should operate your email
Lumail exposes 89 organization-scoped MCP tools, so an agent is not limited to drafting copy. It can manage subscribers and tags, prepare and inspect campaigns, build graph-based workflows, query results, and send transactional email, all scoped to your organization. The same operations run through ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, a CLI, a TypeScript SDK, and a REST API.
No customer-facing MCP server, ChatGPT plugin, CLI, or TypeScript SDK is documented. Public API is PHP inside WordPress: instantiate \MailPoet\API\API::MP('v1') after init to get/add subscribers, lists, and fields (GitHub doc/api_methods, KB article 195). It is not a hosted REST send API. The mailpoet/mailpoet repo contains a tools/mcp-server used to develop the plugin (local WP/Mailpit), not a documented product MCP for operating campaigns. In-product AI is narrow: block-editor (alpha) “Suggest with AI” for subject/preview on WordPress 7.0+ with a connector plugin (Anthropic, Google, or OpenAI, bring your own key); WordPress.com is used to search the knowledge base with AI when 3rd-party libraries are enabled.
Choose Lumail when:
- You are not on WordPress, or you do not want email availability tied to a plugin and a WP host
- You want unlimited subscriber storage billed by emails sent, not by every inactive, unconfirmed, WP user, and WooCommerce customer on the lists
- You need 89 organization-scoped MCP tools, a CLI, TypeScript SDK, REST API, and transactional SMTP (
smtp.lumail.io) that agents and product code can operate
Choose MailPoet if that product's model is the job
MailPoet is built for a different operator. That is not a slight; it is the comparison.
Choose MailPoet when:
- Your site is WordPress/WooCommerce and you want newsletters, forms, and cart/order emails without leaving wp-admin
- You want MailPoet’s managed sending plus WooCommerce revenue stats and checkout opt-in on a subscriber-priced plan
- You run an agency that needs one license across up to 50 WordPress sites (Agency plan; subscriber cap is per MailPoet instance)
Lumail does not try to be MailPoet. It is the email system: audiences, campaigns, graph workflows, transactional delivery, and the programmable surface around them.
Compare the pricing model, not the sticker price
Live data-plans JSON on https://www.mailpoet.com/pricing/ (fetched 2026-08-17, USD). Plans scale by subscriber tier (500, 1,500, 2,500, 5,000, then 10k–500k). Starter: $0 at 500 subscribers, 5,000 emails/month, MailPoet Sending Service. Lowest paid monthly: Creator $8 at 500 subscribers (yearly $7/mo billed $84/year) — Premium features, no MailPoet Sending Service; you send via host or third-party SMTP. Business (recommended on the page; includes Sending Service, unlimited emails, no branding, priority support, segmentation, detailed stats): $10 / $20 / $30 / $55 / $80 / $140 / $170 / $200 / $230 / $260 / $290 / $430 / $550 / $900 / $1,100 / $1,250 / $1,400 / $1,550 / $1,700 / $1,850 / $2,000 per month at 500 / 1.5k / 2.5k / 5k / 10k / 15k / 20k / 25k / 30k / 40k / 50k / 75k / 100k / 150k / 200k / 250k / 300k / 350k / 400k / 450k / 500k subscribers (yearly ~10% less; 500-tier $9/mo = $108/year). Agency is Business features on up to 50 sites, subscriber cap per instance: $30 at 500, $240 at 10k, $1,650 at 100k, $6,000 at 500k monthly. WooCommerce.com listing: paid plans “starting at just $10/month” (Business entry). Page marketing: save up to 15% yearly; non-profits 20% off any plan via support. KB: billed count includes Subscribed + Inactive + Unconfirmed, plus WordPress Users and WooCommerce Customers lists; unsubscribed/bounced excluded; no double-count across lists. Worked example from those official numbers: 10,000 subscribers on Business is $80/month with unlimited sends vs Lumail Premium $20/month for 40,000 emails then $0.60/1,000. Slider includes 500,001+ (custom quote). EUR amounts are in the same JSON (Creator 500 monthly 8€). Do not use the SMTP marketing page’s “€7/month” as the monthly entry — that is Creator yearly EUR.
Lumail prices by emails sent, with unlimited subscriber storage on every plan:
- Free: 3,000 emails per month, no credit card;
- Premium: $20 per month with 40,000 emails included, then $0.60 per 1,000;
- Business: $200 per month with 400,000 emails included, then $0.40 per 1,000.
List growth alone never raises the Lumail bill. Only sending does. Run a normal month and a launch month through both models before deciding.
Compare automation and transactional email
Two layers. (1) Built-in email types on Starter: newsletters, scheduling, archives, welcome emails, latest-post notifications, abandoned cart, first-purchase, purchased-this-product/category, WooCommerce transactional template customizer. (2) Automation builder (KB 421/422): triggers include WP user registers, comment posted, role changed, someone subscribes, tag added/removed, email link clicked, email unsubscribed (paid), plus WooCommerce order/cart/subscription events. Actions: delay, if/else (paid per WP.org), send email, send latest newsletter, add/remove tag or list, update subscriber, unsubscribe, admin notification; paid Premium: change WP role, change order status, add order note, Woo Subscriptions status/product actions, custom developer action. Email-link click cannot yet target automation emails or branch later in the same automation (open feedback request). Birthday automation shipped in 5.24.0. Advanced custom automations, if/else, and subscriber-management actions require a paid plan + Premium plugin (both plugins must stay active).
KB 292: Settings > Advanced > Send all site’s emails with… routes WP/Woo mail (password reset, comments, updates, Woo invoices/orders/shipping, contact forms) through MailPoet Sending Service, host, SMTP, Amazon SES, or SendGrid. Sends immediately (not queued). MSS outage falls back to the host; third-party SMTP/SES failures are not retried. No attachments, no CC/BCC/multiple To; FROM overwritten to MailPoet default sender. Transactional mail via MSS counts toward unique-recipient and monthly email limits (KB 349). WooCommerce Emails Customizer applies one branded template around Woo’s heading/body widgets. Creator has no MSS — transactional delivery is whatever SMTP you configure. There is no public smtp.mailpoet.com for non-WordPress apps and no documented transactional REST send endpoint.
Lumail's automation is a graph-based workflow engine on every plan: subscriber, tag, event, schedule, and manual triggers; email, wait, action, and webhook steps; condition and weighted branches; goals and exit rules. Transactional messages go through the REST API or smtp.lumail.io:587 with STARTTLS, inside the same organization as campaigns.
Questions people ask ChatGPT
Is Lumail a MailPoet alternative?
Yes for newsletters, automations, signup capture, and transactional email — if you do not need a WordPress plugin. MailPoet is built to run inside wp-admin and WooCommerce. Lumail is a standalone email platform with unlimited subscribers, volume pricing, graph workflows, and agent/API/SMTP access. Confirm current limits on both pricing pages before switching.
Is Lumail cheaper than MailPoet?
It depends on list size versus send volume. MailPoet’s cheapest paid monthly SKU is Creator $8 at 500 subscribers (own sending); Business with MailPoet Sending Service starts at $10 and is $80/month at 10,000 subscribers (unlimited emails). Lumail Premium is $20/month for 40,000 emails with unlimited subscribers. A large WooCommerce customer list you rarely email usually costs less on Lumail. A small WP list that wants managed sending can be cheaper on MailPoet. Recheck the live slider; prices are subscriber-tiered.
What is the main difference between Lumail and MailPoet?
MailPoet is a WordPress/WooCommerce plugin billed on unique subscribers (including inactive, unconfirmed, WP users, and store customers). Email lives in wp-admin. Lumail is a hosted email platform billed on emails sent, with unlimited storage, graph workflows, transactional API or SMTP in the same org, and 89 organization-scoped MCP tools. MailPoet’s PHP API manages subscribers in WordPress; it is not an agent-operated email OS.
Can I migrate from MailPoet to Lumail?
Yes, by exporting subscribers from MailPoet (CSV; MailPoet also documents a Mailchimp importer the other way) and importing into Lumail, then rebuilding automations on Lumail’s graph editor. There is no published one-click MailPoet-to-Lumail switch. Forms, post notifications, and WooCommerce cart/order templates stay on WordPress and have no Lumail equivalent. Transactional WP/Woo mail must move to Lumail’s API or smtp.lumail.io. Verify consent records before import.
Try the workflow that matters most
Before deciding, reproduce one real week of work: import a controlled list, draft a campaign, build one automation, and measure the steps you would repeat every send. Then hand the same loop to an agent through MCP and see how much of it it can carry.
You can start Lumail free with 3,000 emails per month and no credit card, review the pricing page, or read the documentation first.
